On October 31, 2005, my dad passed away during open-heart surgery.  We returned home from his funeral on November 7, and within just a few days, I was being asked by the man who claimed to love me … to get on a plane and fly to New York for the Thanksgiving Day Parade (November 20–27).

Saying no wasn’t an option.  There was no space to grieve.  No stillness to process. 

Up until then, my life had included periods of intense stress … years shaped by narcissistic abuse … but nothing that compared to what my body experienced during November of 2005.

By the time we returned from New York, my body was in trouble.  I couldn’t stand upright without needing to hold onto something.  It felt like my body was being pushed backward at my chest.  I didn’t understand it then, but my nervous system was overwhelmed and struggling to regulate.  My body was screaming for help …

and I had no idea what to do.

Today, that’s changed.

I now understand how to support a dysregulated nervous system … and more importantly, how to prevent it from becoming overloaded in the first place.
