Why Do I Feel Overwhelmed All the Time?

If you've been carrying more than anyone realizes...
settle in...
let's talk about it.
If you've felt the whispered pressure of...
"I feel overwhelmed all the time."
You're not alone.
Has your brain stirred from sleep during the night - and everything was fine for a moment - then you remembered...
all the things that are weighing on you?
Or maybe you wake up already feeling behind...
and your scattered, racing thoughts take off before your feet even touch the floor?
Your day evolves around taking care of everyone else and every-thing...
while wondering why you never seem to have enough energy left to take a deep breath...
much less give yourself some self-care.
Or maybe nothing is terribly wrong...
yet everything feels...
heavy...
pressured...
as if there's a weight on your shoulders, forcing them to remain tense.
If you're feeling this pressure...
this weight...
this longing for something different...
something easier...
or perhaps deep within you... you're ready to claim the audacity to dare to dream of something better...
I see you and I feel that pressure with you.
Feeling overwhelmed doesn't mean you're weak.
It doesn't mean you're failing.
It doesn't mean you're broken.
This feeling simply means you've been carrying more than your heart and nervous system were ever designed to carry.
Let's rest on the dock together...
There was a season in my own life when feeling "overwhelmed and pressured" felt like my state-of-being.
Who am I kidding...
it was my state-of-being.
From the outside, I looked like I was managing.
But inside - my ever-present racing thoughts never seemed to stop.
I knew there had to be a different - better - easier way to live...
... and my heart whispered...
it's possible...
I didn't long for a perfect life, because truly...
I had no concept of what perfect would even be...
but deep within me...
I longed for a settled peacefulness...
I longed for the chaos - the pressures - the overwhelm - To Stop.
Over the years, through Florence Scovel Shinn's teachings - my own experiences - thousands of conversations with students - and the gentle guidance I've received along the way...
the insight became beautifully clear.
The opposite of overwhelm isn't having fewer responsibilities.
No...
The opposite of overwhelm...
is reconnecting with that beautiful guiding light within you - where peace wraps your heart in a hug of love...
the tension and pressure drains from your body...
and you - feel - safe...
when the external world hasn't changed.
THIS.... -- is possible.
And that's what I'd love to explore with you.
Let's look beneath the surface - and explore together...
You know...
overwhelm doesn't begin with what's happening today.
Hmmm... no... the foundation of overwhelm probably began many moons ago.
Overwhelm is a conditioned response.
Hear me out on this...
Have you ever noticed...
that when life feels uncertain - when the unknown is lurking around the corner...
your mind starts trying to protect you?
It rehearses future conversations.
It imagines what might go wrong - before anything has happened.
It reminds you of everything that still needs to be done - like a taskmaster with a whip.
It replays the pain of something that happened in the past over and over again on a loop.
Not because it's trying to make you miserable...
but because somewhere along the way, your subconscious thinking began to believe that staying on high alert would keep you safe.
And for a while... that strategy may even have helped...
but there comes a time when living in constant preparation for tomorrow quietly steals today's peace.
As the clock ticks, and time evaporates...
years pass...
and those experiences create beliefs that quietly settle beneath our conscious awareness.
Beliefs that tell us...
"I have to do it all." - "I can't let anyone down." - "I have no control."
And the quiet, insistent, subconscious belief that tells us in a hoarse whisper...
"I've got to do more to be good enough."
Those words become a mantra running in the background of our operating system.
Those beliefs create thoughts.
Those thoughts create feelings.
Those feelings create stress inside the body.
And then they're on a loop of thinking and feeling...
feeding within itself the energetic uncertainty of the uncontrollable, dream crushing subconscious "what ifs" and "should haves."
Your breathing becomes shallow.
Your shoulders tighten.
Your nervous system begins living as though every - ordinary - day is an emergency.
Then...
eventually...
overwhelm no longer feels like something you're experiencing...
... {{heavy sigh}} ...
it feels like who you are.
But pinned under a boulder of overwhelm isn't who you are.
It's simply a programmed survival pattern.
And programs and patterns can be changed.
One - powerful - step - at - a - time.
What becomes possible?
Imagine waking tomorrow - and noticing - your shoulders don't feel so tense...
your breathing is a little deeper...
your thoughts are quieter.
You wake up to the same life - but you're experiencing it differently.
What if peace wasn't something you had to earn?
What if clarity wasn't waiting somewhere just outside your reach?
What if the calm you've been searching for has been quietly waiting beneath the noise all along?
I believe it has.
Because I've watched thousands of students and clients discover this understanding for themselves.
Let's take one gentle step...
For just a moment -- place one hand over your heart.
Take one slow, deep breath - and when you exhale - don't purse your lips to let the air out...
simply open your mouth and drop your jaw.
Then another deep breath.
Did you do it?
... ... stop reading ... ...

Take the deep breaths, then...
as you exhale - without judgment - simply state, "I accept what my life is in this moment."
Acceptance doesn't mean you're in agreement - it simply states that you accept what this moment IS...
and when you experience this acceptance...
the internal battle of "I don't like this and I have no control..."
STOPS.
This statement holds the power that your heart longs for - to change the relationship you have with overwhelm...
and it begins with a breath.
Here are two experiences from the village...
"I didn't realize I was living in survival mode until Kate showed me..."
That simple realization became the beginning of a completely different way of dealing with overwhelm.
Another student shared:
"I feel different... empowered... because I was able to recognize my fear, choose how I wanted to feel, and shift it."
Those words feed my soul - not because they're extraordinary - but because they remind us that transformation begins with awakening to one new awareness...
then another...
then another...
